2024 Cliff Robertson Sentinel Award: Sarah Carver and Jennifer Griffith
/First awarded to Oscar-winning actor Cliff Robertson in 2003, the ACFE's Sentinel Award carries the inscription "For Choosing Truth Over Self." This award is bestowed annually on a person who, without regard to personal or professional consequences, has publicly disclosed wrongdoing in business or government. Recipients of the Sentinel Award exemplify extraordinary courage and integrity, often facing significant personal and professional risks to bring critical issues to light. Their actions serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of accountability and the vital role whistleblowers play in maintaining the ethical standards of our society.
Sarah Carver, CFE, and Jennifer Griffith, CFE, met as paralegals in a private practice law firm in 2000 and joined the Social Security Administration (SSA) in 2001. During their tenure at the SSA, they exposed a massive fraud scheme of more than $550 million. As a result, they say they experienced severe retaliation, were denied protection and ultimately lost their jobs.
After the Wall Street Journal covered their case in May 2011, the U.S. Congress took note and held a hearing before the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations. That same year, both women filed a Qui Tam lawsuit and prevailed with a judgment. However, they were met with more hostility when the U.S. Department of Justice refused to honor an executed settlement agreement on monetary recovery.
Carver and Griffith have appeared on several TV programs, including “60 Minutes,” “American Greed” and most recently, the Apple TV docuseries “The Big Conn.” They continue to advocate for stronger whistleblower protections, accountability of senior executive service officials, statistical transparency within the SSA, proper oversight and reporting within the agency and expansion of the Merit Systems Protection Board.
The remarkable journey of Sarah Carver and Jennifer Griffith is a testament to the courage and resilience required to stand up against corruption. Their unwavering dedication to uncovering the truth, despite facing immense personal and professional challenges, embodies the spirit of the Sentinel Award. As we honor their achievements, we are reminded of the crucial role that whistleblowers play in safeguarding integrity and accountability in our institutions. Carver and Griffith’s advocacy for stronger protections and reforms continues to inspire, paving the way for a more transparent and just society. The ACFE is proud to recognize their outstanding contributions with the 2024 Cliff Robertson Sentinel Award.
