This award is bestowed annually on a person who, without regard to personal or professional consequences, has publicly disclosed wrongdoing in business or government. Sarah Carver and Jennifer Griffith met as paralegals in a private practice law firm in 2000 and joined the Social Security Administration (SSA) in 2001. During their tenure at the SSA, they exposed a massive fraud scheme of more than $550 million. As a result, they say they experienced severe retaliation, were denied protection and ultimately lost their jobs.
